MigApp helps migrants on their journey

The International Organization for Migration, a UN migration organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, launched  MigApp, an application that helps migrants on their journey.

"MigApp provides information to migrants to help them make informed decisions at each step of their migration process, giving them access to a unique platform of reliable, trusted and up-to-date  information," explains IOM in a press release.

In particular, MigApp provides information on travel risks and requirements, worldwide phone assistance.

It also offers several interesting services such as low cost money transfer comparison and an automatic translation program for medical appointments. The app also offers a secure space for migrants to share their story.

Migrants can create a personal account via the application and save electronic copies of their personal legal documents (passport, ID, certificates, etc.)  They can geolocalize and keep family and friends updated with their position. MigApp is accessible through Facebook and Google accounts.
“Migration is not a phenomenon that should be stopped or managed on a crisis footing, but a human reality that must be governed with political courage, evidence-based vision, and a human-centered approach,” explained Eugenio Ambrosi, IOM Regional Director for the European Union, Norway and Switzerland as he presented IOM’s recommendations to the Bulgarian Government during a visit to Sofia as Bulgaria was beginning its presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU)  in January 2018.
IOM hopes this application will be used by over one million people by the end of the year.
